What does it really take to lead in higher education right now?
We put that question to thirteen senior leaders across the UK HE sector and asked them to share their experiences.
The result is our third annual sector insights report - Culture, context, complexity: Understanding leadership in higher education.
What they told us challenges some comfortable assumptions. Leadership in HE isn’t simply about managing complexity - it's about understanding a set of dynamics that are genuinely unlike those in almost any other sector: diffuse governance, competing stakeholder demands, and a tension between mission and financial survival that never fully resolves.
Key themes explored in the report:
What makes HE leadership genuinely distinctive
The cross-sector transition - and why so many capable leaders struggle to land well
The accidental leader - and the cost of leaving this unaddressed
The craft of leadership: credibility, communication and resilience
The transformation imperative - and why efficiency alone isn't enough
The diversity challenge - and why the sector already knows what to do
The most striking insight? The sector already has the leaders it needs. What seems to be lacking is the infrastructure, the investment and the institutional will to help them flourish.
